At our dental practice, Michael Barmé DDS, our goal is to always to save the tooth. However, there are some times when our dentist in Anaheim CA, Dr. Michael Barmé, needs to perform a tooth extraction.
At our dental practice, our dentist in Anaheim CA, can perform either a simple or surgical tooth extraction while our patient remains perfectly comfortable due to our use of local anesthesia. When wisdom teeth are extracted, they do not need to be replaced. However, if a different tooth needs to be extracted, we can replace the missing tooth with a dental implant. There are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. It is common for teeth to be extracted when orthodontic work is being performed in order to make room for teeth to be moved into their proper positions. However, with interceptive orthodontic care on patients under age 11, these tooth extractions are required less often. Wisdom teeth commonly need to be extracted because they often encounter problems when trying to erupt. This is because the wisdom teeth are the last teeth in the mouth to come in, and there often is no room left for this to occur. As a result, wisdom teeth can become impacted, or experience different problems when trying to erupt. Sometimes wisdom teeth will arrive part way and then simply stop. This leaves a gap between the tooth and the gums, which creates a perfect area for materials to gather and for infection to form. If wisdom teeth are infected, painful, or causing any problem in the mouth, it is generally recommended that they are extracted since they are not needed for chewing or for clear speech. If a tooth is decayed to the point that it can no longer be saved, tooth extraction is also necessary. Tooth extraction may also be necessary if a tooth is cracked and the crack reaches below the gum line.
